TRAVELLING PLACES – SOUTH AUSTRALIA
TRAVELLING PLACES – SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Saturday morning sees me on a flight to Adelaide - this really has become one of my favourite destinations. Not only is my son living there, but I love the cultural attractions of South Australia. There are always great restaurants and wineries to experience and each time I visit, there are new places to discover. This trip is a long weekend for Hamish’s graduation.
Next May I am returning with a small group (maximum 10) to not only visit Adelaide but to travel further afield. Driving north we will head to the Flinders Ranges to stay at Arkaba Homestead. Originally a cattle station, Arkaba has been converted by its current owners into a private conservancy; think privately-owned national park.
Over the years this massive property has been returned to its original flora and fauna and the homestead has been converted into a small country house hotel. After a night in the homestead, we head out to a more remote area to enjoy the Arkaba Walk, taking us through the extraordinary landscape of Wilpena Pound.
Walking around 10 kilometres a day with a day pack for water and lunch, we arrive in camp each afternoon where we will find our private glamping site. After a hot shower, our dinner will be served alfresco around the campfire before retiring to sleep under the stars or in our purpose-built tents. Our guides will share their knowledge of the traditional owners, the landscape we are wandering through and its ancient history. This is a ‘luxury walk of Australia’ with everything catered for. After two nights in the wilderness, we return to the homestead for a night before heading off to the Clare Valley.
Staying in the Clare for three nights, we will experience the history of European settlement and the cultural influences of the area. This is also a major produce and wine growing district of South Australia. Our local guide will fill our days with visits to country houses, art galleries, and produce markets. What would a visit to the Clare Valley be without visiting a winery and enjoying lunch amongst the vines? Famous for crisp dry Riesling, I am sure we will enjoy our wine tasting experience.
Arriving back in Adelaide we have an exclusive farewell dinner at the famous Adelaide Markets – I think the best produce markets in Australia. Escorted by a local foodie, we will meet some of the stall holders before enjoying a wonderful dinner.
If you would like to join us on this wonderful trip, there are only two spots left, so contact Travelling Places to secure your place.
