EIGHT YEARS, 264 EDITIONS – THE BATON IS PASSED ON
EIGHT YEARS, 264 EDITIONS – THE BATON IS PASSED ON
Andrew Nagy – departing editor/producer
April 2016 – the first Tamborine Mountain News that I put together with editor Gary Stubbs, had as its cover photo the newly elected trio of Councillors Nigel Waistell, Nadia O’Carroll and Greg Christensen.
It is fitting that a full two local government election cycles later, my final edition of Scenic News should feature newly elected mayor Tom Sharp, and a feeling of a fresh start for the Scenic Rim.
As far as the paper goes, coming editions will be produced by Keer Moriarty and her team – well known in the region as the publisher of the Canungra Times and Beaudesert Bulletin. Keer brings her own experience and style to the paper, and her ambition is – as was mine – to bring the people of Tamborine Mountain and surrounds the best and most interesting paper, reflecting the lives and interests of locals and the businesses they support and run.
In the time I have produced the paper, six years were spent working with Gary – a true “old school” journo, and from whom I learned a lot. We didn’t always see eye to eye on every issue, but the paper was always the better for it, and I think our readers appreciated the outcome.
I thank all our supportive advertisers over the years, and our columnists, whose contributions made the paper worth keeping in hand, re-reading and sharing. A local community paper such as the News should always have as a primary function to connect locals to their businesses, news and events – and it’s reassuring that the paper will continue its 65+ years of unbroken publication in fine hands.
A few words from Keer:
“Scenic Rim Media has the Canungra Times and Beaudesert Bulletin newspapers.
“Owned and operated by business partners Keer Moriarty, Kate Cahill and Susie Cunningham and their staff are committed to producing hyper-local news for the communities we represent.
“Susie, Kate and I are Scenic Rim locals and have strong connections on Tamborine Mountain, and we are looking forward to telling the stories of local people, and helping to promote local businesses, community groups and events.
“We love the history of this newspaper, which is why we have also made the decision to return to the newspaper’s original name, Tamborine Mountain News.
“By chance, just outside our new office in Main Street, is the old mailbox for the Tamborine Mountain Progress Association where people used to drop their letters to the editor and news tips in.
“We are very grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Tamborine Mountain community and look forward to hearing from local residents.”
