Live animal markets – time to stop them
Many people in Asia prefer to choose the animal they want to eat and have it slaughtered then and there. It is fair to say local resistance to this practice is growing especially among young people who are often ridiculed for being soft and taking a stand against the barbarity of wet animal markets.

Animal welfare groups have been petitioning the Australian Government for years to address this issue with China and former Foreign Minister Julie Bishop was on record as saying this subject was on a list for discussion but of low priority. The rabies virus was one of the concerns then because one person every 10 minutes was being infected in developing countries including China, according to the World Health Organisation.

Many people become upset or angered by pictures of animals in cruel conditions or being badly treated; however, they would rather turn away or deny it, even if it occurs in Australia; other countries that have barbaric practices are assumed not to affect
