Column: Community Care - SENIORS’ WELLBEING WITH OR WITHOUT A CARER
Carers would do well to create a comfortable space for the senior to discuss these matters with a view to hearing their seniors.
All seniors are entitled to being treated with respect and kindness and must be aware that there are avenues to ensure their comfort and wellbeing.
Here are some general guidelines for you to feel safe and heard:
• Limit the amount of personal information displayed in the phone book. List only your initials and surname. If you have an answering machine, record your message as “We will call you back…”
• Do not tell strangers where you live, when you will be away or about any of your personal, family, or financial details.
• When shopping, carry smaller amounts of money. Avoid leaving your handbag, wallet, or personal items unattended or in the shopping trolley.
• If you have a touch phone, program in the phone numbers of a relative, neighbour, close friend, and the emergency number ‘000’ ( triple zero).
• If you receive mail, emails, or phone calls, requesting money for a charit
